Resuming Business in Uncertain Times: an update from Stepper UK's Managing director, Peter Reeve

Coronavirus has brought tragedy and great sadness to so many. No one has managed to come through this unaffected. Life has changed, possibly indefinitely. As businesses look to resume trading, sights are focused on how to navigate into a ‘new normal’.

Many of us have spent recent weeks considering how we have operated before and thinking about how we can now be more valuable to our customers. Independent opticians are in a unique position to reconsider their business to meet the new challenges and opportunities. With a scale, a freedom of thinking and the ability to react to local needs, these challenging times can be viewed as an opportunity.

Become Your Customer’s Hero

Lockdown has led to a re-evaluation of so many things. One example has been the appreciation of local businesses, how we have reconnected with them and appreciating how local connectivity adds value to our lives. By delivering exactly the right vision care and solutions to meet your community’s needs, you can reaffirm the trust they have in you.

It is Time to Take Stock

The lockdown has meant a painful period of little or no money coming into the business with money continuing to go out. The thought of any expenditure now is the last thing in many businesses’ minds. During the lockdown, your frame stock has represented a large amount of cash tied up without bringing any return. When your doors reopen you will want to liquidate as much of this stock to generate income. But we recommend you take some considerations first.

Meeting Your Patient’s Needs

Now is the time to consider your frame stock to ensure it will meet the needs of your patients as they return to purchase. STEPPER encourages you to buy frames just as they are needed and only to buy frames that are needed. We are not encouraging you to increase your stock unnecessarily, but we do advise you to review your stock in terms of:

• Do you have the right frame profile to meet the needs of your patients?

• Do you have the right price profile of frames to reflect the economic impact of the lockdown?

• Avoid excess stock

• Buy ‘Just in Time’

• Maximise Cash Flow

Love VALUE

We love the things we value and our connection to these things is now more important than ever.

As a great optician you can add value to your community and STEPPER can add value to your business. The combination is priceless. Watch Stepper’s Love Value video here
