Coffee shop eye tests "the future of eyecare"

Mobile phone providers are working on optical technology that could replace in-practice refraction tests, a leading optical financier is set to predict.

Apple and Android are both working on optics, the Vision China show in Beijing, 17 to 18 May, will hear.

Eyecare professionals will have to shift patient perception, focusing on the health benefits of visiting eyecare practices, Stuart Burn, past chair of the Optical Suppliers Association, is set to say. Speaking to Elaine Grisdale, IOA director of development, Stuart, managing director of Performance Finance, will predict remote refraction is on the horizon.

“We aren’t a million miles away from going to a cafe and having a coffee and a sight test and maybe even have spectacles delivered the same day,” he says, in a pre-recorded interview.

Eyecare professionals will have to adapt, concentrating on clinical care, he will add. The clinical side of optics is developing rapidly. Patients will realise eye health is a sign of overall health, not just conditions such as glaucoma or cataracts.

Entrepreneurs wanting to open their own eye health businesses need to be passionate about their work, he will say. Caring for patients and their teams is key.

Setting up a practice is daunting, because training as a clinical professional doesn’t teach you anything about business. But it uses the same skills – applying judgement to make good decisions. “Ask around, draw on other people’s experience. Speak to other people who own their own practice and people who provide equipment.”

The full interview will be shown at Vision China in Beijing, 17 to 18 May. Find out more.
