In its ‘Impact of COVID-19 on Global Contact Lens Education’ survey in May 2020, the International Association of Contact Lens Educators (IACLE) revealed that 71% of its member institutions were currently closed to students to attend in person, with 76% expected to provide more online lectures following the COVID-19 pandemic.
In light of these findings, IACLE has launched Teach. Learn. Connect, an online education program and communications campaign to supplement IACLE’s existing educational offer and support educators, students and the industry in an effort to reduce the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on global contact lens education.
The TLC Initiative includes webinars on a global, regional and national basis; a half-day virtual conference to ‘Bring the focus back to contact lenses’; a new teaching online platform, IACLETOP, with new tools for teaching and learning practical skills; and opportunities to connect with educators and students worldwide.
“IACLE already has a vast range of online resources and programs and is ideally placed to support our community of educators, students and industry with new methods of teaching, learning and connecting,” commented Dr Shehzad Naroo, IACLE’s president. “The TLC Initiative will provide essential resources to help all of us to adapt to the rapidly changing situation, and continue to deliver world-class education to the practitioners of tomorrow.”
